If God never does another thing for me in this life He has already done enough.
As we open the book of Ephesians, Paul transitions quickly from a short introduction to a wonderful section extolling our awesome, omnibenevolent God:
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Eph. 1:3a).
God is worthy of praise. Why? Well, not only is He amazing beyond our comprehension in His person—consider that angelic beings spend their days around the throne extolling His awesome holiness and they are never bored—but we must also consider what He has done for us.
He has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places (Eph. 1:3b). Through our union with Christ, we have access to every heavenly blessing in the storehouse of God.
As if this is not enough, the apostle recounts how God chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be His own people and not only His people, but His family! Out of His great love for us He chose to adopt us because of no merits of our own (Eph. 1:5) solely through the merit of Christ who is our righteousness (see 1 Cor. 1:30; 2 Cor. 5:21).
These things are to the praise of His grace, for our adoption is something we could have never earned (Eph. 1:6). For at the end of the day, God chose to set His love on us before we were even born! How could we deserve this love when we had not even come into existence yet?
He redeemed us in His Son Jesus Christ, and through Him, He lavished His grace upon us (Eph. 1:8). His grace is not just measured out in a small quantity. It was not given sparingly. There is grace in such great measure that it abounds, it is overflowing—it is grace with leftovers, more than enough.
God never has nor will ever owe us anything.
We were altogether undeserving and yet He is altogether good. He has granted to us a heavenly inheritance (Eph 1:11) that we certainly do not deserve. He has sealed us with His Holy Spirit as the down-payment for that inheritance (Eph 1:13-14) which we totally do not deserve. We do not deserve, nor could we earn, a single blessing from God’s hand, and yet He showers us with spiritual blessings in Christ.
God has been so good to us.
Before we were even a thought in our parents’ minds—or even if we were not a thought and came as a surprise—God knew us, chose us, and determined to set His love on us.
Not because we deserve it, but because He is good.
Not because we were lovable, but because He is love.
If we look at all God has done for us in His Son, how could we conclude anything else other than: He is worthy of our praise, adoration, and thanksgiving. From now, into eternity.
Blessed be God for His marvelous, immeasurable, and mind-boggling grace.
